See the video below for a glimpse into how I created this painting. I used quite a few advanced watercolour techniques to create this piece including glazing, lifting, masking, negative painting and wet-in-wet. This is a pure watercolour painting: all whites are the whites of the paper, no white paint was used. Each feather is delicately treated to enhance to soft beauty of the cardinal, with many layers of colours from golden yellows to bright reds. If you look closely at the painting, the bird is looking back at you, an expression of curiosity droplets of moisture cling to the black tendrils beneath its beak. The cardinal is perched among the branches of early spring, bathed in shafts of light filtering down. This is an original studio painting I did of a male Northern Cardinal hanging out at Parc La Fontaine in Montreal. ![]()
